Wedding Photography Sydney – Lens Basics

A lens is a fundamental component of a camera. Without a lens there is no way to focus an image, so the picture ends up being just white light. The only exception to this is a pinhole camera which has no lens. But this is a school science project, and never used for anything commercial. Everything from professional photography to common mobile phones will have one or more lens for the camera.

Lens vary in type and quality. If you have the option it is worth investing in some good quality lens. While good lens will initially entail a considerable cost, they will last for many years and produce many fine images.

Some technical aspects of lens.

Focal Length – In terms of physics this is the distance in millimeters where the lens focuses the image. In terms of photography this is how wide the image is that is captured by the lens. A low number focal length means a wide angle, a higher number means a narrow angle of view.

Aperture – This is the size of the opening that lets light through the lens. The larger the number the smaller the opening. This interacts with the depth of field, with larger openings having a shallower depth of field.
A large aperture opening is useful for dim light. A shorter exposure can be used with a larger aperture opening, or a longer exposure with a smaller opening.

Depth of field – Part of a picture can be out of focus, often on purpose. Usually the foreground is on focus, and the background is slightly out of focus. This can be used to good effect, as our eyes are automatically drawn to the focused image (or the brightest part).
The depth of field varies with different lens. The depth of field refers to how much of the image is in focal range, and how much is outside the range, and therefore blurred.

Wedding Photography Sydney – Recommended Lens

If we were to only have one lens then either 50mm or 35mm would be best.

A 50mm is reasonably close to the type of image we see with our eyes. It has very little distortion of any image. This type of lens will cover most situations.

Most cameras, including mobile phones, have a 35mm lens. This has a sightly wider angle of view than our eyes, and will have slight spacial distortion around the edges. It also tends to make objects seem further away. But for general photography this is a fairly good option.
