The Accomplished Wedding Photographer
We have higher expectations for any wedding photography. It is not the type of image we take on our smartphones, though sometimes we do get a few great images this way. Rather, with wedding photography, we expect images that are worthy of publication. This is partly a matter of having high-end photography equipment and image editing software. But mostly it is the skill of the photographer. This can be learned through experience and practice, but also through observation, research and advice.
Basic Advice for the Wedding Photographer
- Get the shot list – There are certain group images and a couple of images that we expect from every wedding. There are also certain images that each particular bride and groom want in the wedding album. Talk to the engaged couple about what they are expecting and make a list. Feel free to suggest a few ideas, even if a few end up being used.
- Never miss the photo opportunities. Some elements of a wedding are neatly planned. We want to capture this on film. Other elements are the spontaneous thing that happen on that particular day. When a child laughs, the guest gasps at the wedding dress or that funny thing happens, we have the opportunity for a worthwhile photo.
- Is there a family member who directs all or part of the day? This is one time when the bossy mother-in-law is actually helpful. Work with the person who directs the extended family group portraits. They can take some of the workloads, while you capture the images that they coordinate.
- Look at the Locations in advance – Each place is unique. The ceremony location and the reception hall will have a few great locations for photos. Find these in advance so you know what to do on an actual day. Remember that lighting will change over the course of the day. You can even take a few test photos in advance because engagement photos are a thing.
- Show the couple your previous work, and ask them what they are looking for. Show them other images that you can achieve.
- Get a camera that is silent. There are some very quiet moments in the ceremony. You don’t want a loud click when you photograph the couple taking their vows.
- Capture the details. A pair of stiletto shoes, rings, a bouquet … etc. These are important. And provide a good contrast with group images and couples in front of a landscape.
- Shoot the photos in RAW format. Do not compress the images. This makes a big difference if you process in Photoshop them later on.
- Have spare batteries, memory sticks, everything. If you lose these the day is ruined.
- Don’t delete mistakes. Sometimes ostensibly bad photos can be cropped for good images.
- Be invisible, or at least non-obtrusive, while capturing everything. You don’t want to be in the images yourself, but to be hidden in the shadows while finding the best vantage point.
- Digital photography is immediate. So you might be able to display the ceremony images at the reception, perhaps as a slide show.
