We may see a great-looking photograph, done by professionals, and wonder why it looks so much better than the average images we get ourselves. Or wonder why a few of our photos turn out well while others look plain. We might think that is because those professional images are glossier, but some great artistic photos are earthy and rustic, so that can’t be the answer. It might be how the photo is framed, but sometimes unorthodox frameworks look vary artistic. So what makes professional photographs look better?
Really, there is no one factor. A great image has everything fitting together, all the factors are right. We might say coherence is the key, everything working together. And then we have to remind ourselves what this implies- that one wrong factor can ruin the end result.
Sometimes we can fix the ‘one wrong factor’ with Photoshop. We might increase the contrast, blur the background, or combine two images to remove a photo bomb.
Other tricks with Photoshop are less obvious, but they can be the subtle change that noticeably improves the end result.

Fix the Eyes

We can make the eyes of individuals whiter in Photoshop. While changing other factors seems dishonest (does the person really look like that?) everybody seems to like the idea of white eyes. And this is not difficult. We can even zoom in on the eyes and go outside the lines, overlap with the iris; we won’t notice this when we zoom out. The eyes will just look better. It also helps if we increase the contrast between the whites and the iris in the eye.

Whiter Teeth

We have to be careful here. There is no one ideal for tooth colour. Like hair colour it has to suit the skin complexion if it is to look attractive. So we will have to find the right tooth colour for each individual person.
We can often just lighten the main part of the teeth, living the sides slightly darker. this helps the teeth look slightly curved rather than flat. Use a brush tool slightly smaller than each tooth.
Often the bottom teeth are slightly behind the top teeth and in the shadow. Do not over-correct this, but keep them slightly darker.
Teeth can look slightly shiny, but don’t overdo it. The smile should be attractive, but not the centre of attention.
